Based on FAA approval, Ann Sullivan, Airport Advisory Commission Secretary and Cook County Commissioner – District 4, wants to notify Cook County residents and visitors, particularly those on Skyport Lane and the north side of Devil Track Lake, of the following, as they are in proximity to the staging area for The Heights apartment modules.

Although you’ve likely seen this on social media, heard about it at local meetings, and read about it in the Cook County News Herald, the County wants to inform the public about something you will soon notice on the lower airport property if you live or visit this area.

The FAA has approved storage and staging of the 36 modular apartment units for The Heights, which is the apartment project under construction in Grand Marais on Highway 61 as you enter from the west. The process to get approval began back in March, and following multiple agencies and organizations sending in letters of support, work by the engineering firm helping our airport, and completion of a CATEX (Categorical Exclusion) document involving Cook County’s Highway, Land Services, and Assessor’s Office, the FAA approved temporary storage of the units on the northeast corner of 10.1 acres on the lower airport property. This acreage is large enough to securely store and stage all units simultaneously, in addition to providing adequate space for large equipment used to properly move the units on and off semis.

This is the first time the FAA has ever approved a non-aeronautical use for that area, but due to making our case for the extreme housing shortage the county faces, plus the temporary nature of the use, we are thrilled to have been granted approval. Expect to see the units pulled in from the north side of Devil Track Road, and anticipate the presence of the modules for a little over two months. There will be no impact to the area other than aesthetics.
